In Bali’s hospitality industry, fast and stable WiFi is no longer an optional amenity — it’s a basic necessity that directly affects guest ratings and reviews. Losing one star on Google Reviews because of slow WiFi can have a massive impact on your business.
Here are 5 common causes of slow hotel WiFi and their solutions.
1. Too Many Devices, Not Enough Bandwidth
The average guest brings 2–3 devices (smartphone, laptop, tablet). A 20-room hotel could easily have 40–60 devices connected simultaneously. If your internet bandwidth is only 20 Mbps, each device gets less than 0.5 Mbps — barely enough to open a video.
Solution: Upgrade your ISP bandwidth to a minimum of 100 Mbps for small-to-medium hotels, or 300+ Mbps for larger properties. Consider getting a dedicated line rather than a shared bandwidth plan.
2. Too Few Access Points
A standard WiFi router can only cover an area of about 20–30 meters (indoors). Relying on a single router for an entire hotel is a common mistake that leads to dead zones in certain rooms.
Solution: Use a managed Access Point (AP) system positioned strategically on every floor or area. Each AP should be hardwired via an ethernet cable straight to the main switch, avoiding wireless repeaters which significantly cut down internet speed.
3. Signal Interference
Concrete walls, elevators, and even other electronic devices (microwaves, Bluetooth) can disrupt WiFi signals. In Bali, many hotel buildings utilize thick natural stones that are highly effective at blocking signals.
Solution: Conduct a professional site survey to map signal strength at every location. Position access points based on actual data, not guesswork.
4. Lack of Bandwidth Management
Without bandwidth management, a single guest streaming in 4K can drain the bandwidth that should be shared among 30 other guests. This is the most common cause of “suddenly slow WiFi” complaints during peak hours.
Solution: Implement a per-user bandwidth limiter through your router or controller. For example, capping speeds at 5–10 Mbps per device ensures that every guest enjoys a balanced and consistent connection.
5. Outdated Network Equipment
Routers or switches older than 5 years are most likely incapable of handling the demands of modern connectivity. Older devices typically only support WiFi 4 (802.11n) which has a very limited throughput.
Solution: Upgrade to equipment that supports WiFi 6 (802.11ax), which is designed to handle far more simultaneous devices with low latency.
